More Demand Than Bread: Modernized Traditional Bakery with Iconic Sourdough Bread Seeks Successor

Imagine a bakery where there’s no shortage of customers—just not enough hands to serve them all. This artisan bakery and pastry shop in Northern Hesse has been baking according to traditional recipes for over 100 years. Its sourdough bread is so sought-after that customers travel there specifically for it. Advertising? Not needed. Demand already exceeds supply, and new customers come in solely through word of mouth. Why this acquisition is special: • No backlog of investments: The bakery was modernized in 2016 for over 212,000 €, and the retail space was completely renovated in 2017 for around 100,000 €. You can get started without any initial investments. • Growth is on the horizon: The equipment is designed to handle €1.1–1.2 million in revenue; one oven is practically brand-new—and requests from additional business customers have recently had to be turned down solely due to a lack of staff. • Three strong pillars: The main business with its own bakery, a shop-in-shop location, and a high-margin B2B business with four regular customers. In addition, a regional delivery and catering partner distributes the products to households, hotels, clinics, and daycare centers. • Solid figures: 2025 revenue of approximately 887,000 € following a deliberate, age-related downsizing (previous years: 1.1–1.2 million €). Owner’s profit in 2025: approximately €187,000. • Well-coordinated team: 14 employees, including a trained pastry chef, all of whom are to be retained. • Planning certainty: 15-year lease with an option to extend for the business premises and 6–12 months of training by the owners—including the handover of all recipes, including the sourdough bread recipe. The owners are selling due to retirement; there is no family successor. We are looking for a master baker—or an entrepreneurial individual with a team of skilled staff—who will carry on this baking tradition and maximize the business’s existing potential. The handover is scheduled to take place starting in the second quarter of 2027. A business that no longer needs to attract new customers. It just needs someone to continue baking bread for them.

Buying a company vs. buying a firm

Buying a company means acquiring an independent organizational unit that regularly carries out an economic activity. A company can consist of one or several business operations. An individual can also found such an independent unit if they regularly carry out an economic activity — in that case it is called a sole proprietorship. As a rule, sole proprietors don't have to register in the commercial register; without that registration, they don't legally count as a "firm." A trade name, colloquially a "firm," is the name under which a company or sole proprietor appears publicly and conducts its business. Buying "a firm" therefore technically means acquiring the company's name or trading name. In everyday use, though, it's used interchangeably with buying a company — i.e. acquiring the entire business.
