A Successful Electrical Contracting Company

The company performs all types of electrical work but specializes in larger projects in the residential and commercial sectors. Even without advertising, it has been able to maintain a high level of revenue for years, regardless of cyclical fluctuations in the construction industry. The volume of inquiries exceeds the company’s operational capacity, though it accepts only regional projects. The company offers comprehensive electrical installation solutions for homes and apartments. Structural work is generally carried out by third-party contractors with whom the company has close ties, though under the supervision of its own construction managers. The company’s core activities focus on network cabling, building automation, intercom systems, antenna and satellite technology (bus systems), fiber-optic splicing, smoke and heat exhaust ventilation (RWA) and emergency lighting, KNX-EIB systems, and much more. This also leads to lucrative maintenance contracts that guarantee revenue. The company stands out for its adherence to deadlines, expertise, and quality; it has an extensive network and has therefore built up a very strong customer base. The order backlog and business development remain positive in the current year. The current order volume stands at approximately €1.6 million. Contracts are always based on a fixed-price arrangement, eliminating the need for time-consuming measurements. The company employs 12 full-time staff members and, as needed, 4 to 12 third-party contractors working on-site (qualified temporary workers and small independent contractors), who are supervised by one of the three site managers.

Buying a company vs. buying a firm

Buying a company means acquiring an independent organizational unit that regularly carries out an economic activity. A company can consist of one or several business operations. An individual can also found such an independent unit if they regularly carry out an economic activity — in that case it is called a sole proprietorship. As a rule, sole proprietors don't have to register in the commercial register; without that registration, they don't legally count as a "firm." A trade name, colloquially a "firm," is the name under which a company or sole proprietor appears publicly and conducts its business. Buying "a firm" therefore technically means acquiring the company's name or trading name. In everyday use, though, it's used interchangeably with buying a company — i.e. acquiring the entire business.
